My social channels are awash with articles telling me how to dress better. Do this. Wear that. Follow her. Each day's refresh brings more - more advice, more fashion favourites, more ways to dress better. Each article meticulously constructed to lure me in. Each frame work the same. Do this. Wear that. Follow her. I'm learning it's in my nature to disagree. What if being offline made us dress better? What if we closed our eyes and used our senses, touching every fabric and fibre we encountered? What if we wore colours that made us happy? - cared less about what was right and more about how clothes made us feel? What if we lived our lives in our clothes? - trusting that the ones that served their purpose would stay while the rest would fall away. Trusting that dressing better was always just being us.
*This post is part of a larger body of work that explores Our Relationship With Clothes. Australia is the largest consumer of textiles in the world; we ask questions in the hope of encouraging self-reflection and change.
I love this sentiment! It also touches on a 'trend' that I think might be coming out way- the lack of social media consumption. Does anyone else feel like how detached from the algorithm you are will be seen as a measure of coolness to teens of the future?
I wonder this too often too! I feel pressured to look cool but at the same time am scared to look basic, when all of that shouldn’t matter.
